Does Gratitude Actually Make Us Happier?

Quick question: How many times have students been told to “practice gratitude” as though three nice thoughts can defeat an entire Tuesday?  

TLDR: Turns out, gratitude does appear to help - just don’t expect fireworks. A meta-analysis covering 23 studies, 25 randomized samples, and 6,745 participants found that expressing gratitude produced a small but statistically significant boost in psychological wellbeing. 

Researchers weren’t testing one gratitude journal. They searched academic databases, reference lists, citation trails, and even contacted researchers for unpublished work. Only randomized controlled studies made the cut, which is important because those designs give us a cleaner comparison than “people who like gratitude also report being happier.”

Participants had to express gratitude toward another person through activities such as letters, messages, social posts, video calls, or conversations. Researchers then compared those groups with neutral activities and measured:

  • Happiness

  • Life satisfaction 

  • Positive effect 

Interventions ranged from a single brief activity to eight weeks.

The Big Takeaway:

Compared with neutral activities, gratitude improved overall wellbeing by g = 0.22. In plain English: the effect was real, but small. When researchers separated the outcomes, the pattern held: happiness improved by g = 0.16, life satisfaction by g = 0.22, and positive affect by g = 0.21.

But gratitude was not clearly better than other bona fide wellbeing activities. Against comparison groups doing another legitimate positive-psychology activity, the effect dropped to g = 0.12 and was not statistically significant. 

Translation: gratitude seems better than doing nothing special, but it may not be uniquely powerful.

Here’s another interesting wrinkle: actually delivering the thank-you did not significantly increase the benefit, and longer interventions were not more effective than shorter ones. The study also found no clear moderation by age or gender.

One big caveat: almost every included study involved adults, so we should be cautious about applying the findings directly to K–12 students.

Gratitude may work best as a small wellbeing habit—not another compulsory happiness assignment. 

Here’s how these results can impact your approach this week:

Strategies That Work:

  1. Make it specific. Ask students to thank one person for one concrete action instead of producing a vague list of “things I’m grateful for.”

  2. Keep sharing optional. Since sending the message wasn’t necessary for the effect, students can write privately, hand it in, or keep it entirely to themselves.

  3. Use it at meaningful moments. Try a gratitude note after a group project, difficult unit, class milestone, or conflict repair instead of forcing it into a daily routine until everyone resents being thankful.

Gratitude isn’t magic, and this study doesn’t claim it is. But a small wellbeing boost from a low-cost, low-pressure activity can still be useful, especially when we don’t oversell it.

Okay, Which One Is Fake?

Your first AI literacy lesson of the year just became a game.

It's September. If we're hoping to avoid 30 suspiciously Shakespearean essays by December, AI literacy probably shouldn't wait until November. Thankfully, your opening lesson can involve accusing paintings of being fake.

The Solution: Odd One Out

Google Arts & Culture's Odd One Out hides an AI-generated "imposter" among real artworks and artifacts. Students study the images, choose the fake, and discover whether their detective instincts deserve a badge - or need some serious retraining.

But don't stop at guessing. Ask students why

Was it the lighting? Texture? Weird details? Something looked too perfect? 

Then ask the better question: Is that actually reliable evidence? 

Students quickly discover that AI images can look convincing and genuine art can look bizarre. That's the bigger lesson: AI literacy isn't memorizing five "AI tells." It's slowing down, questioning evidence, checking sources, and being willing to admit, "Yep, that fooled me." 

Is This For YOUR Classroom?

Absolutely, especially as a five-minute warm-up before deeper AI conversations. Just don't teach students that they'll always be able to "spot the fake." Generative images keep improving; the durable skill is verification, not eyeballing.

Strategies That Work:

  1. Evidence Before Voting: Before clicking anything, groups must identify two visual clues supporting their choice—turning guessing into evidence-based reasoning.

  2. Put the Picture on Trial: Assign teams to argue real or AI-generated using only what they can observe, then reveal the answer and critique which evidence actually held up.

  3. Write Your AI Rules: Finish by asking what students should do when they're not sure something is authentic; use their answers to begin class norms around sourcing, disclosure, and verification.

The goal isn't creating students who can magically spot AI.

It's creating students who know "looks real to me" isn't evidence anymore.
